Makerere University through the University Central Management has indefinitely suspended all student social events from happening again in the institution until further notice.
Through a statement that was released by the university, the university management reached the decision after considering the violent events that stemmed up during the 2022 Freshers’ Ball that happened on the 18th of March thus leading to the indefinite suspension of all students’ social events.
The affected students’ social events include; the Annual Bazaar, Freshers’ Ball and Porridge Nights.
According to the Dean of Students, Ms Winifred Kabumbuli, “Makerere University cannot tolerate the incessant culture of violence that characterizes students’ social activities lately, particularly at the Freshers Ball, Bazaars and Porridge Nights.”
The Dean of Students cited that despite various engagements and warnings to the students and their leaders, violence has persisted at the students’ social events.
“Regrettably, the violent altercations have resulted in injury to students and the destruction of property and the threat continues to grow. Management resolved that the Freshers Ball, Porridge Nights and Bazaars are suspended indefinitely and these activities shall no longer be permitted at the University until further notice.” the letter read.
