Makerere was established in 19920 by the colonial government in Uganda as a small vocational school which eventually became Uganda’s lone institution of higher education. In 1970 Makerere university became an independent university if the republic of Uganda.
Makerere is currently ranked the best university in Uganda, the 3rd best in Africa and ranked 712 in best Global universities. Most of the prominent leaders in Africa have also been through Makerere University and these include; Mwai Kibaki, john Patrick Amama Mbabazi, the former General Secretary NRM party, Benjamin Mkapa was the 3rd president of Tanzania, Julius Nyerere Kenyan president 1960 -1985 among others
Makerere University has had five chancellors since its establishment including three presidents and prof. Ezra Suruma as the current chancellor and prof. Barnabas Nawangwe as a re-appointed vice chancellor
There were a couple of activities that were carried out in the commemoration of the university for example public lectures in conjunction with Makerere university Business school that were held on different days as well twitter spaces in preparation for the grand finale of Makerere at 100 celebration .
A monument has been un veiled today on 6th October in commemoration of Makerere University’s 100 celebration and the President of the Republic of Uganda has graced the event and officiated the final Centennial celebrations by cutting the ribbon .
Several top current and former government officials as well as the business moguls have also graced the event. Among the arrivals was the deputy speaker of parliament and many more other officials
Makerere University has created a legacy that will be celebrated for ever ,for it has been there , strong during wars and pandemics for example covid 19
