Makerere University has announced a 100% increase on graduation fees just a month before the 72nd Graduation Ceremony which is expected to occur in May an act that has worried finalists and their parents.
The University released a notice indicating that the graduation fees payment terms had increased by 100% from Ugshs 110,000 to Ugshs 218,000, unlike the past graduation ceremonies.
The university cited the increase to have been brought about by the reintroduction of compulsory payment by graduands for their graduation gowns.
The changes are a result of the university allowing the graduands to purchase the graduation gowns at will in the virtual ceremony that took place last year.
Makerere University has now set dates for its 72 graduation ceremony which is scheduled for a period of 4 days from May 23 to May 27.
The ceremony, according to a circular from the Academic Registrar’s office, will see more than 14,000 students graduate with diplomas, bachelor’s, master’s, and PhDs in different programs.
